The Radikon Jakot is named in honor of the historic name of the grape now known as Friulano. For many years it was called Tocai, or Tokaj in this local dialect. A legal battle over the use of Tokaj with the Hungarians did not go well for the Italians, so Radikon simply put the name on the label in reverse. This defiant act is very much at the heart of this winemaker's spirit. Radikon makes skin-contact wines with extended aging much as his ancestors did, and is completely uncompromising in his efforts. The Radikon Jakot 2016 is from a favorable vintage and shows a plethora of zesty, macerated fruit notes alongside hints of exotic spice and tannins. This is a wine to decant and let breathe, ensuring the full aromatics will display.
The Radikon winery is located in Oslavia, on the plateau that goes from the bridge on Isonzo river, near Gorizia, to San Floriano hill. The company consists of about eighteen hectares of vineyards located near the company headquarters and placed on steep slopes, very tiring to work but very generous in quality level. From 1980 to 2016, the company was run by Stanislao (Stanko) Radikon, his wife Suzana and their son, Saša. Stanko sadly passed away in 2016 and Saša took over the estate.
