The Ponson label counts on five generations of family-led winemaking. Brothers Maxime and Camilletook over management at the untimely death of their father, Pascal Ponson, in 2018. Their land lies in the village of Coulommes-La-Montagne, less than ten miles outside of the epicenter of Reims, where their tiny holdings — all of them under the premier cru designation — on the northern slope of Montagne de Reims are harvested organically and treated with minimal intervention. Le Petite Montagne is a blend of 40% Pinot Meunier, 25% Pinot Noir, and 35% Chardonnay pulled from several premier cru vineyards. With flavors of white peach, baked bread, earth, and a bit of smokiness on the finish, this is a surprisingly complex crowd-pleaser. This Champagne is deep, full-bodied, and very well-balanced. Serve cold and early on alongside cheese plates and hors d'oeuvres.
