Fernand Coudert, father of current proprietor Alain Coudert, bought the estate in the 1960s after it had sat through decades of neglect — as the story goes, the former owner had blown up at the idea of losing his Moulin-à-Vent classification when the French created the Fleurie appellation (Clos de la Roilette sits right on the border of the two Beaujolais areas). The whole thing went off a cliff. The label, to this day, is a drawing of that disgruntled owner’s favorite racehorse, Roilette. Fernand fixed things up and brought his son on board in 1984, and Alain soon took the lead. Fleurie, owing to its high altitude and its conditions for propensity for more delicate, Pinot Noir-like wines (remember this is the Gamay grape we are talking about), is known as the Queen of Beaujolais, but the Clos de la Roilette Fleurie is said to drink more like a Moulin-à-Vent, much to the chagrin of that former owner. In any case, it’s delicious. Gamay tends to pair well with nearly anything you throw at it, so keep this one on hand for when you’re not sure whats on the menu!
